Although the basics of most college fashion programs are the same, there can be some subtle differences between college fashion programs that can be quite important when it comes to being successful in the niche of your choice.
For example, all college fashion programs will focus on certain key topics that are important to any fashion designer. These course will include study in areas such as textiles, color, tailoring, sewing, fashion history, pattern making, and CAD. Your college fashion program will also touch on designing certain types of clothing, such as footwear or clothes for men. If you are most interested in a career in one of these specialized areas, however, you may wish to add additional coursework in these areas into your college fashion program.
The good news is that you have plenty of college fashion programs to select from. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Association of School of Art and Design currently accredits approximately 250 institutions that offer college fashion programs. Even better, some of these college fashion programs are available online, which means you can take the coursework from the comfort of your own home if you so desire.
Regardless of if the college fashion program is online or at a brick and mortar institution, you generally have to complete some basic design and art courses before you can be officially admitted into the fashion designer program. In addition, you may be asked to submit sketches or other works that can demonstrate your artistic abilities. After getting officially admitted to the program, you will delve even further into design theory and will be well on your way to an exciting career in the field!
